about

I cut these tracks from a performance involving minimal microphone input and a bunch of live software manipulation (a setup I’ve been calling the some-input mixing board). I would describe this music as Hermetic in multiple senses: both literally inspired by medieval alchemists and occultists—particularly the Rosicrucians—as well as reflecting the distinct turn my life has taken since our apartment fire. For a number of years, my music had always revolved around recordings of the people and places that were important in my life. I have a mountain of unheard recordings from what turned out to be our last year or so at Avenue B. I don’t intend to open or listen to them for the foreseeable future.

Consequently, this music refers to very little outside itself. I don’t think of it as especially connected to anything I’ve made or plan to make. The SIMB was fun to play with, but—given its high tendency toward feedback loops—very difficult to control. Though the piece is divided into four parts, it has seven faces.

All material recorded January 13-14 2024, NYC. Artwork features an engraving by composer & alchemist Johannes Mylius (ca. 1583–1642). For an immediate and perpetual ceasefire.
